Terminology

Retail Deployment Terms, Defined

The vocabulary construction, store operations, and retail IT teams use when they scope a rollout - and what each term means to the crew doing the install.

New Store Opening (NSO)
The retail program milestone covering everything that must be installed and tested before a location can trade. On the infrastructure side an NSO means cabling, switching, WiFi, POS drops, and cameras all have to be live and certified before the grand-opening date, and that date does not move.
Tenant Improvement (TI)
The build-out a retailer performs inside a leased space before opening, usually governed by a landlord allowance and a landlord-approved scope. Low-voltage cabling, network closets, and camera pathways are TI work, so the install schedule is driven by the general contractor's drywall, ceiling, and power milestones.
Cardholder Data Environment (CDE)
The set of systems, network segments, and devices that store, process, or transmit payment card data inside a store. PCI DSS requires the CDE to stay isolated from guest WiFi, cameras, and back-office traffic, which is why retail cabling and VLAN design get drawn around the CDE boundary first.
Back of House (BOH) Network Closet
The stockroom or office space holding a store's switch, patch panel, firewall, and circuit demarcation. In retail it is rarely a purpose-built telecom room, so a deployment has to account for shelving, heat, space shared with inventory, and staff who need physical access to the room every day.
Mobile POS (mPOS)
A handheld or tablet-based register that takes payment anywhere on the sales floor instead of at a fixed counter. mPOS moves the reliability burden onto wireless, so store WiFi has to hold a payment session through aisles, fitting rooms, and curbside pickup zones without a roaming drop.
Demarcation Point (Demarc)
The physical point where the carrier's circuit ends and the retailer's inside wiring begins. In malls and inline retail the demarc often sits in shared landlord space down the corridor, so the install includes an extension run and coordination with property management before a circuit can be turned up.
Remodel Wave
A batch of stores scheduled for the same refresh scope inside a defined window. Waves let a chain repeat one design instead of designing each store individually, and they set the cadence for field crews: same bill of materials, same runbook, same test results, store after store.
Closeout Package
The per-store documentation handed over when an install is accepted: as-built drawings, port and patch panel labeling maps, cable certification results, photos of the rack and every device, serial numbers, and a punch list signed clear. It is what makes the next technician, remodel, or audit fast instead of exploratory.
