Before hiring a cabling contractor, ask 20 questions in five groups: credentials and coverage (who is in the building, COI, BICSI, licensing), process (survey, after-hours, PM, change orders), materials and quality (exact components, labeling, pathway, warranty), testing and documentation (certification standard, as-builts, photos, sample closeout), and commercial terms (payment, failed drops, references, and when they're not the right fit). Each has a red-flag answer that predicts trouble.

These are the questions our own channel partners ask us — and the ones we wish every buyer asked, because they filter for the contractors who do the work right.
The 20 questions, with red-flag answers

Credentials & coverage (1–4)

Process & scheduling (5–8)

Materials & install quality (9–12)

Testing & documentation (13–16)

Commercial terms (17–20)

Why the documentation questions carry the most weight
Documentation failures don't show up at closeout — they show up years later, at full price. We once took over a 21-camera site where cameras 1–10 had been sold as one brand but were actually a Jovision OEM, and cameras 11–21 were a Hikvision-clone OEM with a completely different stream path. No documentation existed; the original installer never noted it. Nothing worked through the new video system until we walked the site, sniffed every stream, and re-documented every path and credential — two days of work that should have been a page in the original closeout package.
Questions 13 through 16 exist to prevent exactly that. A contractor who names its test standard, shows a sample closeout package, and photo-documents by habit is a contractor whose work your next vendor can build on instead of excavate. Ask those four first if the meeting runs short.
When four questions are enough — and when SRS isn't your answer
For a small single-site job, four questions cover the real risk: the COI (question 2), the test standard (13), the warranty (12), and recent references (19). A good local shop that clears those four is the right hire — and at that scale it will beat SRS on price and drive time, because our coordination model pays back on multi-site programs, not one-room jobs. Ask all 20 when the project has multiple closets, occupied space, an enforced GC, or a site count.
Straight answers on vetting contractors
What test standard do you certify against, and what deliverable do I receive? The strong answer names both the instrument and the artifact — Fluke certification with a PDF report per drop, plus as-builts at closeout. That one answer predicts install quality better than any reference call, because contractors who certify their work build so it passes.
Four cover the real risk on a small single-site project: the COI with limits, the test standard and deliverable, the warranty terms, and recent similar-scope references. A good local shop that clears those four is the right hire at that scale. The full 20 earn their time when the project has multiple closets, occupied space, an enforced GC, or a site count.
Either can be right — the red flag is a contractor who can't tell you which, or whose subs operate without agreements. The strong pattern is a defined structure: SRS runs in-house W-2 leads as the backbone with a vetted W-9 subcontractor bench, every sub under a 24-month agreement with a 150-mile non-compete and a COI audited before dispatch. Ask any contractor to describe their equivalent.

No — low-voltage licensing is the legal requirement and varies by state. BICSI credentials are the industry's competency signal: they predict standards-compliant pathway, termination, and testing work, and many manufacturer warranty programs require certified installers. Treat a named BICSI credential as strong evidence, and no named credential as a question mark.
Walk. Unit pricing — per drop, per AP, per camera — in the original quote is your only protection on change orders. A contractor who withholds it retains the ability to price every mid-project add from scratch, without competitive pressure, which typically lands at 2–3x the bid-equivalent rate. Good answers elsewhere don't offset that.
Before, ideally inside a written RFP — putting the questions in the spec forces every bidder to answer in writing and makes the responses comparable. Asking after quotes arrive still works; it just costs a round of clarifications.
In writing, with the quote: COI attached, W-2 leads and vetted bench described, licensing listed, Fluke PDF per drop committed, as-builts and photo documentation standard, sample closeout package on request, NET 30 terms with 40/30/30 milestone billing, and unit pricing for adds. Question 20 gets a real answer too: under roughly 25 sites, a local shop is usually your better deal — and we say so.
